Campaign "Back to the Legendary Writing: Jawi"
Jawi is a verbal communication and writing technique that was used in Southeast Asia to write various languages. Jawi is based on and derived from Arabic, and it has all 31 original Arabic letters. However, there is still a distinction between Arabic and Jawi, which contains six extra letters built to meet the Malay phoneme. Jawi has been used since the 10th century AD, when Islam arrived in Malay Land. Jawi writing format will commence on the right and cease on the left. Unfortunately, Jawi writing is fading away from Malay society since it was partly a decision by the British and Dutch to expand native education, and partly to distance Malay from Muslim influence. Thus, Malay culture rapidly abandoned and rejected Jawi writing in official script.
Therefore, we have initiated the ‘Back to the Legendary writing : Jawi’ campaign alongside Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). The highlight of the campaign is to enhance JAWI writing skills among Malaysian people of all ages and all races. This is because JAWI writing was once upon a time considered as the common writing to communicate with each other. Thus, this campaign is the golden window for reminiscing the Golden Writing in the traditional Malay-alphabet world. Kids and adults are very welcome to come and join this campaign. This is the perfect time particularly for parents and teachers to expose JAWI writing to the youth generation and encourage them to master the writing skills, knowing each alphabet and more. Furthermore, this campaign has a lot of information sharing and it is all about JAWI writing and all things related to it. People can learn about the history and background of JAWI writing, how to prepare and use Khat pencil, method of writing JAWI on paper and so on. There are more interesting games and programs as well. Come and join our campaign to have an amazing experience.
